WS 2000 Wireless Network Switch

WS 2000 builds on the success of the WS 5000 - the first 'wireless switch' system in the market offering unparalleled wireless LAN networking, wired LAN overlay, scalability, network policy control, and management for enterprise customers. Similar to the WS 5000, the WS 2000 centralizes wireless networking intelligence that was previously distributed throughout a wireless network via traditional 'access points'. In the wireless switch architecture, access points are replaced by low cost media access devices called Access Ports that merely encapsulate and send traffic to the Switch for processing.

Access Ports, in combination with the Wireless Switch, replace traditional distributed intelligence access points on a typical WLAN architecture. The functionality of a traditional access point is centralized in the Wireless Switch along with additional features that are unattainable in a distributed model, resulting in a low-cost Access Port passed at the edge. By using the Wireless Switch to manage Access Ports, the Symbol Wireless Switch System is able to realize a number of benefits that reduce the total cost of ownership of a WLAN:
